Joe Kelley, one of the Shadows of Knight in their "Gloria" heyday, has released his first album as a frontman. Judging by The Blue Shadow (TearDrop 1007), Kelley has smoothed his garage beginnings into a straightforward rock approach that blends city and country blues. Kelley's compositions have time for fun -- "Good Time Rockin' Rollers" heads for the promised land a la Chuck Berry -- but mainly concern tough times: He gets "Stuck Down Here in Houston," wonders "Have You Ever Been Busted," and ends up "Livin' Out On the Street."
